Ryan McElgunn, 39, never thought that as a doctor of physical therapy (DPT) at St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute he would one day be a patient.
Ryan has worked for St. Luke’s since 2009 in both inpatient and outpatient settings, helping patients recover from spinal cord injuries and orthopedic needs. “It’s a rewarding place to work and see all the amazing things that happen here. I get to see people at different points of their recovery, across the continuum of care,” he says.
It was his injury while skiing last year, and re-injury one week later while playing soccer with his daughter, that Ryan experienced the care provided by St. Luke’s medical professionals in a whole new way. “I trust our facility and the professionals working there. I told my doctor where I wanted to go for physical therapy,” Ryan says.
Since Ryan was unable to immediately return to work, he chose a St. Luke’s therapy location that was convenient for him with a therapist he respected: St. Luke’s Dominic Severino, DPT, located at the OZ Fitness in south Spokane. “He spent a lot of one-on-one time with me, completing a full evaluation, examining my knee and analyzing how I was moving. We then worked together to develop a plan for meeting my rehabilitation goals."
Ryan spent a week and a half undergoing intense physical therapy, using the resources available at the OZ Fitness facility to regain strength and endurance for his return to work.
Having seen another side of St. Luke’s, Ryan says he would recommend their services to anyone, “St. Luke’s has an excellent staff, great facilities with convenient times and locations.”
“Dominic was great. He was able to help me get back to work, back on the soccer field with my daughter and back skiing this winter,” he adds.
