St. Luke's Recognized with Dual Re-Accreditation
Services Exceed Joint Commission and CARF Standards

(Spokane, Wash) - St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute, a division of Inland Northwest Health Services (INHS) and the region’s largest medical rehabilitation center, received a clean bill of health from The Joint Commission and from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). “Receiving full re-accreditation by the Joint Commission and CARF is an achievement and direct result of our dedicated employees, physiatrists and leadership,” said Chuck Gersdorf, administrator for St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute. “This is one measurement for patients and the public to know of the quality care and safety being provided at St. Luke's, the only dually-accredited Joint Commission and CARF rehabilitation hospital in the greater Spokane area.”

The unannounced Joint Commission survey included St. Luke’s inpatient units for Brain injury, Orthopedic, Spinal Cord, and Stroke and outpatient clinics for aquatic therapy, better bones and balance, biofeedback, cancer recovery, cardiac rehabilitation, dizziness, fall prevention, hand therapy, incontinence, industrial rehabilitation, lymphedema, neuromuscular, orthopedic, Chronic Pain Program, pediatric outpatient services, physiatry, psychology, pulmonary rehabilitation and soft tissue pain. Surveyors interviewed staff, physicians and patients; reviewed medical records and other documents; assessed compliance with the national patient safety goals and toured the facility to look for safety issues.

The Joint Commission's accreditation is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. The Joint Commission accreditation helps hospitals improve their performance, raise the level of patient care, and demonstrate accountability in the continuously-changing health care marketplace.

The CARF accreditation found St. Luke’s to be in compliance with CARF’s accreditation standards, which signals the facility’s commitment to continually improving services, encouraging feedback, and serving the community. St. Luke’s received several exemplary marks including: commitment to patient feedback; transparency of outcomes data on the St. Luke’s website; the Center of Occupational Health & Education (COHE) electronic-claims-tracking system in collaboration with Labor & Industries; and utilization of innovation and technology with therapy scheduling systems, care plans and team conferences; and a leadership team that works collaboratively and effectively in strategic planning.

"It was challenging to have two different national organizations arrive at St. Luke's to conduct triennial hospital accreditation surveys in the same week,” said Pat Holmstead,M.S., INHS Director of Quality Improvement Services. “The staff, physicians, volunteers and board members who participated in the surveys did an excellent job and the survey results were very good. We are proud to provide the highest quality of care to our patients.”
