In 1995, five people with physical disabilities approached St. Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute looking to participate in organized sports. St. Luke’s developed Team St. Luke’s adaptive sports for athletes with many types of physical disabilities.
In 1999, Team St. Luke’s launched its first competitive youth team, a wheelchair basketball team with six athletes.
Competitive track and field was added in 2000, and the team has grown to more than 40 athletes who compete in track and field, road racing, swimming and powerlifting.
Team St. Luke's is now an all-inclusive program with two elements: Competitive and Recreational. Althletes still have the opportunity to compete in sports, but also have the opportunity to participate in recreational and educational events that help them learn adaptive sports, while giving them the opportunity to interact with peers.
