Five Team St. Luke’s athletes will compete for Team USA of U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee, at the 2011 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships which will take place in Christchurch, New Zealand, January 21-30, 2011.

Chelsea McClammer, Christine Nielson, Amberlynn Weber, Austin Pruitt and Kasey Andrews of Team St. Luke’s will help comprise the Team USA roster of 54 athletes (34 males and 20 females). This marks the first time in history that so many athletes from one program have qualified.

“The level of commitment for these athletes is immeasurable, especially when taken into account that all are under the age of 21. They encompass a sense of mental toughness and physical prowess, that most peers their age don’t have,” said Teresa Skinner, coordinator for Team St. Luke’s. “The history they have brought about however is only made possible through the growth of this program by the collaboration of community involvement and their hard work.”

Teresa Skinner was also selected as the assistant wheelchair track coach for Team USA in this competition.

Nancy Webster, Director of Therapy Services at St. Luke’s said, “We are extremely proud of all our athletes, particularly these five that have acquired this level of achievement. Their dedication and commitment is evident. We also recognize and commend, however, the role that Teresa Skinner, their coaches, volunteers, and parents with assistance from INHS, have played in helping them attain this level of achievement.”

Team St. Luke’s is a structured sports team for young and adult athletes with physical disabilities, which encourages people to reach for their dreams and achieve success. Team members have the opportunity to purse college sports scholarships, participate in sports camps and compete in elite regional and national competitions, while developing valuable-life skills.
