Spokane, WA – Team St. Luke’s athlete Mariah Alexander is graduating from North Central High School and has signed with University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona to play on the Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team.

“This is truly an amazing story about Mariah and the impact that Team St. Luke’s has on people’s lives. At first, Mariah and her family were hesitant about her involvement, but we worked with them to have Mariah join Team St. Luke’s. Mariah’s commitment to the team and wheelchair basketball is driving the next phase of her life,” said Teresa Skinner, Team St. Luke’s coordinator.

Mariah became an amputee within the last year. She joined Team St. Luke’s during her senior year of high school and has been involved in competitive basketball events.

This year marks a stepping stone in Team St. Luke’s history as Mariah is the first female to be recruited to play on a collegiate basketball team. She was heavily recruited by the UA and will begin playing basketball as soon as she arrives on campus this fall.

Team St. Luke’s athlete Austan Pierce, the first male to be recruited on a collegiate basketball team, has also signed on to play wheelchair basketball at the University of Texas in Arlington.
